Recently Received Grant Support
From the Institute of Museum and Library Services (through the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners) - $7500 for "Second Acts." Second Acts is intended to meet the recreational, informational and technological needs of adults aged 50-70. Among the activities being supported are programs of interest to that age group, such as drama reading and nature journaling; programs on healthy living, including an introduction to curling and a speaker on beekeeping, among other; and a series of workshops on the use of technology. The Institute of Museum and Library Services is the primary source of federal support for the nation's 122,000 libraries and 17,500 museums. The Institute's mission is to create strong libraries and museums that connect people to information and ideas.
From the IBM Corporation - $1000 to assist in the MMPL's purchase of dedicated computer workstations for a new GrandFamily Resource Center, and for GrandParenting-specific print and electronic resources, to help grandparents and the grandchildren they are raising. This grant has been awarded in recognition of the volunteer service of Albert DeFlorio.
From the Kirkman Trust (administered by the Town of Barnstable) - $13,482.14 to support the acquisition of e-readers and three-year subscriptions to three electronic resources (Mango for language learning; Learning Express; and World Book). This grant was awarded to all seven village libraries of Barnstable, and the amount listed here represents the share of the grant that is being received by the MMPL.
Taste of Marstons Mills, 2011
Our fourth annual Taste of Marstons Mills at Liberty Hall was a great success, attracting 75 people who sampled 12 soups, 4 stews, 12 desserts and some breads, all cooked by members of the village community.
In addition to the chefs and volunteers, the staff would like to thank Serendipity for its contribution to an outstanding evening.
As usual, the diners voted on Best Soup, Best Stew, Best Dessert and Best Bread. In most cases, the votes were very close. The winner in the Soups category was Erin Comp for her Momma's Chicken Noodle Soup with Buttermilk Thyme and Dumplings; the Best Stew was awarded to Donna Lawson's Pulled Pork and Cole Slaw. Emma Comp took the prize for Best Dessert, with her "Just Carrot" Carrot Cake, and Ken and Nancy Jenkins walked away with the award for Best Bread for their Date Nut Bread.
The Library plans to publish a cookbook of the recipes presented at this year's Taste of the Mills, and will include some popular recipes from previous years.
75 people left Liberty Hall with satisfied smiles and full stomachs, eagerly awaiting the next annual Taste of the Mills!
