Climate Change: the Bottom Line
Dr. David Gallo

DATE CHANGE: 22 MAY, 7:30 pm
In May, we will be presenting a lecture by Dr. David
Gallo, Director of Special Projects at the Woods Hole Oceanographic
Institute.
"There is little doubt that the earth’s
climate is changing. The debate becomes about how much change is due
to human activity and how much is due to other natural phenomena.
Regardless of the cause, it’s in our own best interest to understand
the consequences of climate change and its impact on global society
(national security, energy, water resources, etc). But before we can
begin to discuss these issues we must better understand the role of
the oceans.
We now know that the sediments of the seafloor,
the polar icecaps, and the coral reefs all contain a detailed record
of the earth’s climate history that can extend millions of years
into the past. We also know that the circulation of ocean waters strongly
condition the present and future weather patterns. Anthropologists
attest that throughout recorded history, small changes in ocean circulation
have had dramatic impacts on humanity and in some cases lead to societal
collapse.
The bottom line is that the information we need
to guide us into the future is out there. Whether we make understanding
climate change a priority becomes more a question of leadership than
capability."
Dr. Gallo's biography states that "In his present
role, [he] works closely with scientists and engineers at the forefront
of global exploration and discovery. He has participated in numerous
expeditions to the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Ocean, and to the
Mediterranean Sea. He was one of the first oceanographers to use a
combination of manned submersibles and robots to map the undersea
world with unprecedented clarity and detail. Most recently he was
co-expedition leader during an exploration of RMS Titanic and the
German battleship Bismarck using the Russian MIR submarines. David
is passionate about exploration and discovery and dedicated to communicating
the importance of science and engineering to the public-at-large."
